EMBATTLED Vice - Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Ikechukwu Chidobem, has been sacked from office, following violent demonstration by the students of the institution.

Professor Chidi Ugwu, who until the appointment, was the Director of Academic Planning of the institution, was named as the acting vice chancellor of the university.

The Governing Council of ESUT which announced the appointment on Thursday stated that the state governor and visitor to the university, Mr. Sullivan Chime, had approved the appointment which took immediate effect.

On the ongoing strike action embarked upon by the staff of the institution, the governing council regretted that it had impacted negatively on the level of internally generated revenue, with which the state government’s subvention was supplemented to address regular payment of workers’ salaries.

Meanwhile, the arrest of 27 students of the university and the alleged killing of a student by the police during last week protest by the students had continued to generate tension in the university .

The arrest of the students came in the wake of a report that two students, including a son of a senator in the Second Republic and a 100 level student of Microbiology whose name was given as Victor Mgbejiofor were allegedly beaten to death during the protest even as the police denied having hand in the shooting of the students.

Parading the suspects before newsmen on Tuesday at the state police headquarters, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Isaac Akinmoyede, said that the students embarked on violent protest on Monday, which eventually culminated in wanton destruction of property, which included street lights, bus stop stands, modern dustbin stands, Zenith Bank billboard located at Bisalla Road junction in Enugu metropolis.
