How do we solve Religious Clashes like the one in Jos?

For the past week, I've been wondering aloud and asking myself how we can stop the kind of bloodshed that happened in Jos. It's a real pain to learn that at this stage in the history of Nigeria, we can't still leave together without fighting like dogs and cats. Most developed countries of the world still contain religious differences amongst its populace. We can't we learn from these countries? What can we do better to stop these clashes that end up in cutting the lives of future Leaders?
