By Chris Ochayi

ABUJA - To ensure the
success of the
forthcoming voters'
registration exercise,
the Federal Government
has announced the
shifting of resumption
date for all public and
private primary and
secondary schools in
the country to January
30, 2011.
Minister of State for
Education, Mr Kenneth
Gbagi who disclosed this
while speaking with
journalists in Abuja, said
only SS III students
who are preparing for
their final examination
are exempted.
He said the new
development was
prompted by a letter
written by the
Independent National
Electoral Commission,
INEC, to the ministry,
requesting for shifting
of resumption date for
schools for the second
term to enable them
use their premises as
centres for the
nationwide registration
exercise.
Gbagi while describing
the voters' registration
as the most sensitive
period in a democratic
process, said no price
was too much in the
nation's quest to
conduct credible,
transparent, free and
fair elections.
He added that the
yearning of every
Nigerians, adult, youth
and children is for the
nation to elect credible
leaders during the
elections and this is the
most crucial stage of
the elections.
"It is a national call for
the growth and
development of the
country and I am sure
the compliance will be
total," he said.

Francisco, get the point. This is a total abuse of power. A total abuse on the right of a Nigerian child to go to school. This is a pour sign of underdevelopment and uncivilizasion. Such a thing can never happen in a country where TRUE DEMOCRACY is being practised. So now tell me; what do you expect this innocent students to do durring this break? Haven't they stay at home enough? What about those Nigerian students in the streets, who are keen to learn? Don't you know that the more we allow these children to stay at home, the more they are exposed to various evil stuffs and thereby consistuting moral breakdown. You see, what the school does is, it engages this students; make them occupied with academic works. Have you ever imagined what would these students be doing at home for the next few weeks? Do you mean that there are no other alternatives? Where have INEC being use for their registrations for their past elections? What is it about this 2011 election that we have to use it to affect these innocent students? These are some questions that INEC and the Minister of education have to anwser. The truth is bitter, but it must be told. Our leaders have failed us; Including those at Government's offices. We need change. We need to be reborned. We need a baptism of change. We need leaders that truelly understand the meaning of DEMOCRACY and FREEDOM. See my fellow forumites, i'm not happy atall. This stuff is making me really mad. Please, do have a blissful week. @ francisco, i'm sorry to say that i laughted when i read your comment. Brother, we are in Nigeria, but not as Nigerians. I know you might be wondering why i said so. I want that to be a puzzle to you. We are leaving in a currupt country. A country were corruption is the norm of our lifes. I witnessed the Delta state rerun election. I leave in Delta. Believe me or not, the election is a close replica of the other currupted elections. It was an election were our fundamental human right to vote and be voted for was abused. I cann't tell you all about the election, but if you are interested to know more, i believe you know what to do. Now let me give an answer to your question. Listen carefully, a true, good and democratic leader can only be elected in a free and fair election. We all know that our electoral system is corrupt and you donn't expect such a system to produce a genuine and true leader. Don't get me wrong, the leaders may have good intentions toward nation building, but the system will inflence them by polluting their thoughts and plans for the people. We are all praying for change. You can start the change in your own little way. You can start with your family and friends. You see, to initiate a change you must be willing to change the mentallity of the people you wish to affect with the change. Nigeria need a revolutional flow of change. I pray that God should help us by providing a true leader for us. CHINYXBOY COMMUNICATING!

To me dis action is absurd, shifting schools restmption date is not in any way d solution 2 d electoral problem in dis country.
Weder dey conduct election or not, Ebele wil b d presidnt and PDP Govnrship candid8s wil emerg in PDP state. There is no point disturbin d education sector.
May God save Nigeria.

@ francisco, let me reason in your direction. Brother, i do get your point. And believe me, i have full understanding of what you are saying. Despite your reasonable facts and conclusions, i still stand that this break has a negative effect on the students. I don't wish to go into more arguement with you or anybody here. Every forumite is totally left to his or her own oppinion, cos that is one of the fundamental/basic rules of this forum. You have made your point and we expect others to still air their own views on this matter. Happy academic week. CHINYXBOY SPEAKING!

imagine registration going on & 'bomb' explosions occuring..... who will be the victim.    shifting the resumption date is not in any way a good measure.    but you guys have to consider the state of our country. insecurity & bomb   explosion is our latest achievement.

@francis
no matter how hard u argue this, the fact still remains that what inec & other governmental bodies responsible for the shiftin of both primary & secondary skool resumption date,is capitally WRONG..this is not the first election that is being held in Nigeria, why shud this particular one b differnt.
