THE Christian Fellowship of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Communicators for Christ, held its maiden edition of academic summit recently at the Afe Babalola Auditorium of the institution.
According to the president of the fellowship, Gbenga Rufai, the summit aims at helping students make good choice in journalism career, as most students make wrong choices.
Speaking at the summit, head of department, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, advised students to practice journalism with clear conscience. The Editor on Sunday of The Nation Newspaper, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, in his speech, noted that journalism involves being multi-skilled and having a wide knowledge. He added that the profession is in need of journalists who are globally literate, meaning that they must be able to speak international languages, think globally and work locally.
Ace broadcaster and manager in charge of programmes at Continental Services, owners of Radio/TV Continental, Tokunbo Ojekunle, addressed the students on the need to seize opportunities and identify open doors.
He likened broadcasting to the medical profession, where how one spends his time is beyond him.
Ojekunle counselled those aspiring to become a broadcaster not to see the money in the profession but be ready to make their own mark in the industry.
Fielding questions from students, editor of the Champion Newspaper, Justus Nwakama, said journalism, just as any other endeavour is all about risk. He recounted how he started earning a living by writing for a newspaper as undergraduate and how he was later absorbed immediately after graduation.
