Welcome to this great University!

The University of Nigeria is in the Enugu State town of Nsukka. It was founded by Dr Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria. It is the first indigenous university in Nigeria.

Here is except about the University from the University's website. The University was formally opened on 7th October 1960, as the climax to the Nigerian independence celebrations in the Eastern Region. Her Royal Highness, the Princess Alexandra of Kent, representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Nigerian independence celebrations, performed the opening ceremonies and laid the foundation stone of one of the University's early buildings.

Classes began on 17th October 1960 with an enrolment of 220 students and 13 members of the academic staff. The opening convocation addresses were delivered by the Chairman of the Provisional Council, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of the Federation of Nigeria, and by Dr. John A. Hannah, President of Michigan State University, USA.

The University has two campuses, in Nsukka (University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN) and in Enugu (University of Nigeria Enugu campus, UNEC). UNEC houses the Faculties of Medicine, Law, Business, Health Sciences and Environmental Studies. UNN houses the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.

The medical school, in Enugu, has most of it activities in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), also in Enugu. The College of Medicine carried out the first open heart surgery in sub-Saharan Africa in 1974. It has since evolved into the center for cardiothoracic excellence for the West Africa region. A lot of medical research is also being carried out in the college.

Its motto is To Restore the Dignity of Man.

Point of correction, University of Nigeria has three campuses.
1) University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus (UNN)
2) University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC)
3) University of Nigeria, Aba campus    (UNAC)
The Aba campus used to be National Institute of Nigerian Languages, the University took over last year due to a federal govt directive.

University Of Nigeria Nsukka - Brief History

The university marks its origins with the passing of a law in 1955 to establish a university in the Eastern Region of Nigeria. As part of the first steps to launch the university, the Eastern Nigeria Government invited advisers from both the United States of America and the United Kingdom to assist in the planning of the facilities and educational programs. The University was formally opened in 1960 with 220 students and 13 instructors. Recent enrollments have been over 20,000 students.

The institution notes that its courses of study are designed to be relevant to the day-to-day life of Nigeria with a focus on addressing social and economic issues facing the country. Admission is open to men and women from all nations, religions, and political beliefs.

Areas of study include programs related to agriculture, industry, the classics, the arts, and the sciences.

The main campus of the University is located on 871 hectares of hilly savannah in the town of Nsukka, which is located about eighty kilometres north of Enugu. The school has 209 hectares of arable land used for experimental agricultural farm. The town of Nsukka is accessible from all parts of Nigeria. There are modern shopping facilities and a large market in Nsukka town.

Another University of Nigeria campus is in Enugu. This campus was formerly the Nigeria College of Arts, Science and Technology, Enugu, and was incorporated into the University in 1961. The Enugu Campus (200 hectares) is in the heart of Enugu, which is the capital of Enugu State of Nigeria. Enugu is a modern city, accessible by air, rail and road. The university's College of Medicine and the Faculties of Business Administration, Environmental Studies, and Law are located at the Enugu campus.

A third campus was opened in 1973 in Calabar, Cross River State. The campus at Calabar became a University of Calabar in 1977.

Our institution is indeed a great one that has given birth to other ones. I still wonder why www.unn.edu.ng is never kept up-to-date. Most of the info there are not only outdated but obsolete. The webmasters should try to improve the look and feel of the website and try and post daily news there or even work with this forum on how daily campus news and annoucements from University management could be announced on this forum which I think will soon become the most popular web presence for Lions & Lioneses.

You guys are right. If the university has a website, then it should be populated with current happenings on campus so students could rely on it to get info. Anyway, we're here to help pass any info that's not on the site.
