Kebbi State government has spent over N9.2 million for the purchase of forms for this year's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to be conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

While presenting the forms to five zonal education officers in Birnin-Kebbi, for onward distribution to eligible students in their respective zones, Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Yusuf Rukubolo said the forms should be distributed free of charge to indigent, but eligible students.

He further directed that the forms should be given to only candidates with a minimum of five credits in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

“The state government has been assisting children of the poor who cannot afford to buy the forms and gain admission into any of the tertiary institutions either in the state or outside.”

He disclosed that the state government had released the sum of N540 million for the payment of tuition fees, scholarship allowance and financial assistance to indigenes of the state studying in various tertiary institutions
within and outside the country.

In another development, Governor Saidu Dakingari has pledged adequate funding for the state University of Science and Technology Aliero.

Dakingari, who made the pledge while receiving the chairman and members of the institution's governing council, who paid him a courtesy visit, said his administration was ready to fund the institution adequately so as to maintain its lead among universities in the country.

“The state government is satisfied with the performance of the university within the first three years of its take-off and I assure you that government will continue to provide necessary funds to the university”, he said.

While assuring that his administration would continue to make education its priority, he said a committee had been set up to proffer solutions for the sector's improvement and that government would implement all its recommendations.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of university's Governing Council, Justice Umaru Atu Kalgo thanked the government for the autonomy it gave to the institution and called for more funds to enable the university achieve its goals.

The state governor deserves credit for this. But I hope he is only rendering service to humanity and not campaigning for 2011

Education is the bedrock of any developed nation.Investment in education can as well be said to be investment in other sectors of the economy;A society that breeds illiterates is a moribund state.Like i said, this' most commendable and worth emulating.

I totally agree! I wish other states will take this giant stride and encourage the impoverished to get educated. Give a man education and you've fed him for the rest of his life.

If there's political undertone attached to it,i tink its better dis way.Than laundering dis moni in foreign accts and kumin wit the selfish interest of rigging and winning the election at all cost.

Guys permit me to say that I might defer from you guys opinion, But I see this action as rubbish. My reasons are as follows. The money he used in purchasing this Jamb forms for people, why can he invest it in their University? this is suffixes to say that I don't even Know if Kebbi state has any existing University. So where does he want this people to apply for? Other peoples universities? Their secondary school is nothing to write home about.the money is needed there. Why such massive publicity? does he expect me to clap for him? I think he does not deserve credit in this. It is only in Nigeria that the government will give the masses one sachet of pure water and then make it a big deal with wide publicity. Come to think of it, do you know the amount of fraud that would have been carried out under the purchase of this forms? He should learn from governors like Fashola, Chime to mention but a few. to me I see it as good radians to bad rubbish. Sorry to say this guys.

Kebbi state is classified among the educational less developed states, yet people in the state will rejoice for just a one year opportunity which you do not know if you will make it. Why can't he give a capital investment, than making a reoccurring investment, which I simply see as a selfish with interior motive. To they should have just criticized this guy

Ah! It's part of service to humanity.Beside kebbi is one of the poorest states with very minimal allocation from the FG,and little or no natural endowments to attract investors.

I really think I should commend the efforts of the Kebbi State Government. I agree they should have invested in having facilities for their own universities, but I also think that if they have Universities that no one attends, then the aim of having those Universities are defeated. I'm trying to say that citizens of Kebbi state need exposure from other states in Nigeria - which makes me think the government took a commendable approach in purchasing JAMB forms for those impoverished folks and giving them the opportunity to at least seat for JAMB and see if they can get into different Universities in Nigeria. See it this way, the government could have chosen to use that money for something else which wouldn't benefit the young people. We are talking about young people here and giving them hope for tomorrow. What I'll want to see after this gesture is for the government t also offer scholarship to as many of those folks that make it eventually to the Universities. Nigeria is getting better for young people!
