UNN Senate recalls Nsukka Campus Students

Following the violent demonstration by students at the Nsukka Campus of the University of Nigeria on January 16, the Senate closed Nsukka Campus temporarily to avoid further destruction of property and ordered the students off the campus.

The Governing Council thereafter set up an Administrative Panel to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the demonstration, apportion blames and make recommendations to prevent future occurrence of similar incident.

Also following an emergency session by the Governing Council on Friday, February 5th, 2010, the Senate during its 248th emergency meeting on Saturday, February 6th resolved to recall students of the Nsukka campus immediately.  The decision is in the overall interest of the students in particular, to bring the academic calendar of the Nsukka campus in line with the other campuses and in response to the sustained popular demand from major stakeholders for resumption of academic activities at the Nsukka campus of the University.

Arising from the above sequence of events, deliberations and the interim report of the Administrative Panel of Inquiry, the University is to re-open immediately under the following procedure and terms, while the Panel continues to complete its assignment.

1.    Final year and postgraduate students return to campus on Wednesday, February 10th, 2010.  Examinations for final year students continue from Monday, February 15th, 2010.

2.    Other students are to return on Monday, February 15, 2010, and start their examinations from Friday, February 19, 2010.

3.    Returning students of the Nsukka campus are to obtain letters of undertaking, which must be signed by their Parents/Guardians, guaranteeing their being of good behavior throughout the rest of their stay as students in the University.

4.    Each returning student is also required to sign an undertaking to be of good conduct throughout his/her stay in the university.  Both letters are to be submitted to the Registry as a compulsory pre-condition for re-admission into the university.

5.    Furthermore, the Governing Council directs that Student Union activities at the Nsukka Campus, and the Student Union Senate, be temporarily suspended pending full restoration of normal academic activities.
6.    The Governing Council will decide in conjunction with the Senate further terms of readmission of students, in any, after the Administrative Panel completes its assignment.

Council and Management of the University appeal for the cooperation of staff, parents, guardians and all concerned in their determined effort to ensure the immediate restoration of normal academic activities at the Nsukka Campus of the University.  God bless us all as we do this.
